The Los Angeles Lakers doubled down on their commitment to LeBron James this season.
They drafted his firstborn son and even gave him a big contract despite knowing he might not even crack the rotation, making sure to keep James in town.
LeBron is still one of the best offensive players in the league, and we know what he’s capable of when he’s at his best.
However, not even the most optimistic Lakers fans could take a look at this roster and realistically feel like they have a championship-caliber team.
That’s why it only makes sense that Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss start thinking about the future.
And according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, they’ve already identified their next superstar once LeBron retires: Luka Doncic (via ClutchPoints).
“[The Lakers] have their sights set on Luka Doncic in the future… But the Lakers might not trade in their future picks… They’re not going all in like you might expect many teams to do with LeBron James.”

Apparently, the Lakers will target the Slovenian star to be the face of the franchise once LeBron walks away.
Still, O’Connor reported that the team wouldn’t go all-in and trade all their future assets to lure him away from the Dallas Mavericks.
Truth be told, their chances of getting Doncic then would be quite slim.
Unless Luka actively forces his way out of Dallas or just decides not to re-sign with them at some point, that’s just not likely to happen.
And while joining the long list of NBA legends playing for the Lakers might be quite appealing, they might have to offer him a lot to convince him to leave a franchise that’s literally built around him right now.
