Although LeBron James remains a marvel in his 21st NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers need to start thinking of their future.

James can feasibly play for a couple more years given how he’s looked during the 2023-24 season, but the Lakers will need to start bridging the present with the future.

Anthony Davis has proven that he can lead the team in James’ absence and the front office will eventually need to find him a new running mate when James inevitably retires.

Los Angeles tried to make a splash at this year’s trade deadline, but couldn’t get a deal done because of their limited assets.

However, the team will have more opportunities this offseason when they have more draft capital available to use in a potential trade.

One name to watch out for is Atlanta Hawks star guard Trae Young whom the Lakers will be targeting via Jovan Buha of The Athletic.

“Yes they are. I can confirm that from multiple sources. They are going third star hunting this offseason. You’ll probably have to give up Austin. The one name I hear is Trae Young. That’s the most realistic one right now,” Buha said.

Young is currently sidelined with an injury, but the Hawks have previously been open to listening to offers on him.

Atlanta has been stuck in mediocrity for years and trading away Young would allow them to rebuild the roster again.

For the Lakers, getting Young would be a huge boost for their offense and give them a worthy successor plan post-James.
