While the betting markets currently seem to have the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers getting back to the Super Bowl for another rematch, there is a real chance there will be at least one new team in this season’s big game.
It was just 18 months ago that the Philadelphia Eagles got there and held a 10-point halftime lead over Patrick Mahomes and crew before collapsing and losing on a Harrison Butker field goal in the closing seconds.
The Eagles then fell apart at the seams late last season after starting 10-1, but they have made some changes on both sides of the football, and LeSean McCoy, a former Eagles running back, said they will play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy again this season.
“Everybody got so much to say. We talking about last year?” McCoy said. “… We going to the NFC Championship Game, we going to the Super Bowl. That’s what it is.”

This offseason, the Eagles’ biggest addition was Saquon Barkley, the talented star running back who played his first six seasons with the New York Giants and is an electrifying player when healthy.
Defense was Philadelphia’s big bugaboo last year, and thus they brought in new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, as well as pass rusher Bryce Huff and rookie defensive backs Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.
On offense, they are armed with one of the NFL’s best wide receiver duos in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, and also have an MVP-caliber quarterback in Jalen Hurts.
Perhaps the Eagles won’t reach the Super Bowl this season, but there is plenty of reason to believe that, at worst, they could be the second-best team in the NFC.
