The Detroit Lions rode an electric offense all the way to the NFC Championship Game this past season after winning just one playoff game since 1957, and now it’s time to think about what it will take to go even further.

The team took a step in that direction today by extending one of its best players to ensure he’ll be around long-term and continue to be a foundational piece of this offense.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced today that the Lions have agreed to an extension with star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, giving him four years and more than $120 million to make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.

It’s a historic deal for St. Brown that came out of nowhere, but it’s more than deserved given his production so far in his career.

He has improved across the board every year and last season put up 119 catches (2nd in the NFL) for 1,515 yards (third in the league) and 10 touchdowns.

With uncertainty outside of St. Brown at the wide receiver position, the Lions made the smart and trendy move.

Wide receivers are getting huge bags left and right, and St. Brown may have just reset the bar.

On the Lions’ depth chart behind St. Brown, there is still-unproven former No. 12 pick Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond, and Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Josh Reynolds left in free agency, so unless the team adds to the WR room in the draft, St. Brown will be relied upon as much as ever next season.
