Lions GM Explains Why The Team Refuses To Move On From Jared Goff

The Detroit Lions moved on from Matthew Stafford after years of mutual letdown.

They failed to surround him with the kind of team he needed to be at his best.

Likewise, he fell short multiple times when he had a chance to get his team over the hump.

So, when they traded him to the Los Angeles Rams and got Jared Goff in return, most people thought it was just a matter of time before the Lions would either draft or trade for another quarterback.

However, GM Brad Holmes has blatantly refused to do so, and he recently told Peter Schrager on his “The Season” podcast why that’s the case.

The Lions have had top 10 picks in the last two years. They could have taken a QB both times.

They didn’t.

Per Holmes, people have talked down on Goff because of recency bias, stating that they seem to forget the he was a No. 1 pick and that he could actually play very well.

Holmes praised his mental toughness and how he doesn’t complain and just gets the job done every time he’s out there on the field, citing that he wasn’t surprised at all when he had that good season last year.

Maybe, in hindsight, the Lions will one day come to realize that they had the opportunity to move on from Goff and land a superstar quarterback instead, but it doesn’t seem like that thought has even crossed their minds just yet.

They’re happy with the direction their team is going and rightfully so, and there’s reason to believe all Goff needed was a change of scenery and a team that actually trusted him to be at his best.
