The Pittsburgh Steelers have a very interesting quarterback situation taking place as their first preseason game nears.
While veteran Russell Wilson, who Pittsburgh signed as a free agent earlier this offseason, rests his calf, Justin Fields, who the team also traded for earlier this offseason, has been taking snaps with the starters.
This currently has the feeling of an open competition.
In a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, former NFL player and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick gave his take on who he thinks the Week 1 starter will be in the Steel City.
“I have a feeling, based on my conversations, that if Justin can continue to ascend like he is looking in practice, he’s going to start Week 1. He’s going to be the opening day starter,” Riddick stated.

If Riddick is right, that would be a very interesting decision from Tomlin.
The thought was that after Pittsburgh brought in both quarterbacks this offseason, Fields, after a tough start to his NFL career in Chicago (41 total turnovers in three years), would sit behind the experienced vet in Wilson to work on his game a little bit.
Now, with Wilson taking some time to heal up, Fields is quietly gaining the upper hand in the competition it feels like.
The former All-American at Ohio State is a talented player and is improving his game as each day goes by under the guidance of Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
Time will tell to see if he can improve enough to actually be named the Week 1 starter like Riddick thinks.
