Lucas Giolito has pitched for three different organizations in 2023: the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Cleveland Guardians, his current employer.

On Monday, he was tasked with one of the biggest games of the season for the Guards: against the Minnesota Twins, the current leaders of the AL Central division.

Giolito was highly disappointing, though.

In three innings, Giolito walked three and allowed seven hits and nine earned runs.

He conceded three home runs and got the loss as you would imagine.

In the process, the right-hander made history, but the wrong kind.

“Lucas Giolito is the first pitcher to allow 8+ runs in a game for 3 different MLB teams in the same season since Bill Magee did so in 1899 for the Louisville Colonels, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Senators,” OptaSTATS tweeted.

Think about it: no pitcher had allowed eight or more runs in a game for three different organizations since the last year of the 19th century.

It had been a while until Giolito did it.

This year, Giolito allowed eight runs in 3.2 frames against the New York Mets on July 18, as a member of the White Sox.

In his first start as an Angel on August 2, he conceded nine runs in 3.2 innings against the Atlanta Braves.

Monday was also his first outing as a Guardian, and it’s fair to say it didn’t go as planned.

He was a recent waiver wire pickup and Cleveland hopes he can help in the stretch run.

After his ugly start against Minnesota, Giolito’s ERA is at 4.88 for the season.
