The New York Yankees don’t quite know what to do with struggling starter Luis Severino.

Nobody knows what is happening to him, but he has been MLB’s worst pitcher to this point in 2023.

It’s a shocking development for a guy with a career 3.81 ERA and three seasons of top-flight performance as a starter: 2017, 2018, and 2022.

This year, however, he is sporting an 8.06 ERA in 63.2 innings.

Seeing how he has struggled badly in the first inning this season, the Yankees opted to put an opener in front of him on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox.

Ian Hamilton took care of the first frame.

Severino entered in the second and promptly allowed a three-run home run.

All things considered, he pitched two innings and conceded four runs, all earned, on five hits and a walk.

He also struck out one.

Yes, Severino has been really bad in the first inning, but Wednesday’s game proved that he hasn’t been much better the rest of the game.

He has the worst ERA among MLB pitchers with at least 60 innings this season.

Something is seriously wrong: velocity is not a problem, but command has been all over the place, his pitches don’t have the same bite they usually have, and his confidence is at career-low levels.

He has said himself that he feels like the worst pitcher in baseball and would do anything to get better.

It’s a shame to see such a talented pitcher struggle so much, especially with free agency looming for him.

Will the Yankees have enough time to get him right?

How should they plan to approach the situation?

Those are the burning questions surrounding Severino right now.
