In the NBA, like in all sports, more often than not, there can be some regression on a nightly basis.

Teams that shoot the lights out one night might not be as efficient in the next and vice versa, and the same goes for players.

More often than not, those who aren’t great defenders can’t sustain that for a long stretch, and it seems like that’s what happened with Luka Doncic.

Doncic had played the best defense of his career during the playoffs, but he hasn’t been able to do that in the NBA Finals, either because of exhaustion, injuries, a lack of commitment, or all of the above.

Doncic fouled out late in the fourth quarter of Game 3.

Then, following the loss, he tried to put the blame on the referees, stating that they didn’t allow him to play physically and that they shouldn’t have ejected him in the NBA Finals (via CBS Sports).

“We couldn’t play physical, so… I don’t wanna say nothing, but you know. 6 fouls in the NBA Finals… come on, man.”

Truth be told, Doncic should’ve known better than to be baited into two quick fouls with the game on the line.

Yes, superstars often get superstar treatment, meaning they can get away with a thing or two, particularly in key situations.

Nonetheless, it’s not like he was wrongfully called for those fouls; they were all fouls.

Doncic is one of the best players in the game, even if he never becomes a plus-defender.

But he has to be accountable for his actions as well, and those statements won’t do his team any favors in Game 4.
