Luke Voit Is Suddenly Available After Contract Decision

First baseman/designated hitter Luke Voit is paying the price of being a bat-first corner infielder.

His profile can be found relatively easily, and for cheap, by most MLB organizations.

There is no question the man has impact power, but since he is a first baseman and not a very good one at it, he has found it hard to stick with teams in the last couple of years.

He started the year with the Milwaukee Brewers and then got injured.

Once he got healthy, he was designated for assignment.

The New York Mets signed him to a minor league contract on June 12.

It obviously had a clause that stated if he wasn’t up by a certain date, he would be granted his release.

That’s exactly what happened this week.

“Luke Voit has opted out of his Mets contract, per @mikemayer22. He had 14 home runs and a 1.058 OPS in 37 games with Triple-A Syracuse this year,” Talkin’ Baseball tweeted.

Those numbers are good enough to grant him a big league opportunity somewhere.

When healthy, Voit might not hit for a high average, but he has power and patience.

If defense wasn’t a factor, he would probably have a team by now: his career OPS is a solid .807 so he can still help an offensive-starved team.

There are lots of those.

He will strike out a lot, but his offensive upside is relatively high.

Let’s see if he can strike an MLB deal somewhere because if not, he might consider Japan or Korea as his next destination.

He still has enough offensive talent to be in the majors, though.
