On Thursday evening, Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson celebrated his “Showtime running mate” and one of his best friends, Michael Cooper.

Johnson hopped on Twitter to announce that Cooper will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in a few months.

After being a finalist for several years, the former Lakers star will join Johnson and many other NBA icons.

“I’m so happy for Michael, his wife Yvonne, and his kids for this well-deserved honor and Laker Nation should be ecstatic as well! Cookie and I can’t wait to support Coop at the Hall of Fame ceremony on August 17th,” Johnson said.

I don’t even know where to start! I tried to wait until Saturday…but I just can’t hold the news I’m so so thrilled that my Showtime running mate and one of my best friends Michael Cooper has been elected into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame!!

Like many others, Johnson called Cooper a great defensive player, but also a strong offensive threat too.

Johnson pointed out that Cooper once held the record for the most three-pointers in the NBA Finals until Steph Curry entered the league years later.

“He was mentally and physically tough, which made him such an amazing teammate,” Johnson said.

Cooper was a very important part of the Lakers back in the 1980s.

During his 12 years with the team, he averaged 8.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists on 46.9% from the field.

He was selected for eight All-NBA Defensive Teams and won the 1986-87 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

He played a crucial role in the Lakers’ five championships in the 1980s.

Johnson and Cooper were drafted only a year apart and both played with the Lakers for their entire careers, becoming important teammates and very close friends as well.

After he retired from the NBA, Cooper spent his time coaching and working for the Lakers, the Los Angeles Sparks, Denver Nuggets, and Atlanta Dream.

After an exciting, successful career and a long wait, Cooper is about to join the NBA Hall of Fame.
