The Washington Commanders are finally out of the shadow that was former team owner Dan Snyder and will be playing for a new ownership group when they hit the field for the 2023 NFL season.

The Commanders are now owned by Josh Harris, though his ownership group also includes Los Angeles Lakers legend and icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

Johnson is no stranger to owning sports teams as he’s currently a part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, and Los Angeles FC.

However, his foray into the NFL is a momentous occasion for him as there are no majority Black owners in the league.

While Johnson is a minority owner himself, he understands the weight on his shoulders and what it means for his community to be part of the Washington franchise.

Ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals, Johnson expressed his excitement via his Twitter account.

Cookie and I are so excited to watch the Washington Commanders take on the Arizona Cardinals tomorrow at our first game as new owners of the Commanders. The fans are excited, the city is on fire, and the players are definitely ready. Go Commanders!

It definitely feels like there’s a new energy and vibe surrounding the Commanders organization and Johnson is a large part of that.

The roster itself has several young and talented players on it and they’ll be looking to make a good first impression for Johnson and the rest of the ownership group.

Fortunately for Washington, they are heavy favorites against an Arizona team that is largely expected to struggle throughout the year.

The Commanders will face stiff competition in the NFC East as it features Super Bowl hopefuls in the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, but for the first time in a long time there’s reason to believe the team can surprise people.
