The San Francisco 49ers are still trying to figure out what it will take to successfully resolve the contract situations of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk and left tackle Trent Williams.
Aiyuk has been demanding a big extension of about $30 million a year since the start of the offseason, while Williams wants his contract restructured, presumably because there is no guaranteed money left for him right now.
There is a debate about which player the 49ers need more, and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears said it’s Williams.
“I don’t think they can compete for a championship without Trent Williams,” Spears said, via NFL on ESPN.

Williams is considered the best left tackle in football by most people, and overall is considered one of the best players in the NFL.
San Francisco loves to run the football, and virtually all of its running plays take place on the left side of the field because Williams is such a force.
Since coming into the league as the No. 4 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by Washington, he has made the Pro Bowl 11 times and has been named to the All-Pro First Team in each of the past three seasons.
Williams is even more valuable to the 49ers when one considers how problematic the right side of their offensive line has been at times.
They have reached the NFC Championship Game four times and advanced to the Super Bowl twice in the past five seasons yet haven’t won the Vince Lombardi Trophy since the 1994 campaign.
To finally bring home another world championship, they likely will need both Williams and Aiyuk to get there.
