The Seattle Mariners‘ pitching depth just suffered a severe hit.
Robbie Ray, who was on the injured list and had made just one start this year, is not going to return this season.
Mariners insider Daniel Kramer reported the bad news.
“Robbie Ray’s latest development is unfortunately not a good one. He will need surgery to address a ‘flexor tendon repair,’ Scott Servais just said, and will miss the rest of the 2023 season,” he tweeted.

Ray, 31, was placed on the injured list earlier this month due to a left flexor tendon strain.
However, he hadn’t been able to start a throwing program, which was probably a sign of things to come.
Ray hasn’t been able to live up to the hype that his five-year, $115 million deal (signed before the 2022 season) generated.
Injuries have been mostly to blame for that, though, at least this year.
He was able to pitch 189 frames last year, and had a decent 3.71 ERA.
He hasn’t been close to the pitcher that won the 2021 Cy Young award in the American League, finishing with a 2.84 ERA and 248 strikeouts that year with the Toronto Blue Jays.
He still has three years left on his five-year deal, so the Mariners have to pray that this is not an issue that carries over to 2024.
Right now, Luis Castillo has been a bonafide ace for Seattle, and Logan Gilbert and George Kirby have performed like reliable mid-rotation stalwarts.
The same can be said about Marco Gonzales.
Chris Flexen has been the weak link, though, and the Mariners are one injury away from a disastrous situation.
