The Dallas Mavericks have a superstar in Luka Doncic that they can confidently build around, though the team suffered a setback in the 2022-23 season when they didn’t make the playoffs.
The Mavericks were coming off a Western Conference Finals appearance the year before and looked poised to build on that, but instead, they spiraled down the stretch of the season.
Dallas tried to resuscitate their team by trading for Kyrie Irving, though the star guard was unable to carry them to the postseason.
With mounting pressure to win now, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is going to be aggressive looking for the right players to surround Doncic and Irving with throughout the regular season.
Cuban is one of the most involved team owners in the NBA today and there’s no doubt that he’s got a pulse for the team and what it needs.
However, Cuban also isn’t afraid to make moves if a player isn’t acting accordingly and he revealed that he’s even traded players for their vices via The Patrick Beverley Podcast.
“100%, because it’s a team. No lie, I’ve traded guys because they smoke too much,” Cuban said.
Patrick Beverley: When it comes to the NBA, everybody has vices. Does that factor in how much [money] you give someone?”
Mark Cuban: “100%, because it’s a team. No lie, I’ve traded guys because they smoke too much.”

Smoking marijuana has become a more widely accepted practice in professional sports, though it seems like Cuban understands that too much of it can disrupt a team and distract them from their goals.
While Cuban doesn’t mention any players by name, it’s interesting to hear him be so candid about why they would have been traded.
Other owners may be doing the same thing for their own teams, but for Cuban to publicly admit it makes for some interesting food for thought.
