The NFL‘s running back market has been under scrutiny throughout the offseason.

Several of the league’s most elite players at the position have been devalued, resulting in a lack of contract extensions.

Josh Jacobs and Saquon Barkley were eligible for long-term deals with their respective teams, which still hasn’t happened.

This has caused several current and former players to speak out, including Mark Ingram, who shared his thoughts via FOX Sports NFL.

“When it is time for the running back to get paid, it’s atrocious what they’re doing to them,” Ingram said.

“It’s atrocious what they’re doing to [running backs]. They’re not appreciating them, they’re not valuing them.”

Ingram pointed out an injustice he sees in the league for running backs.

While wide receivers, quarterbacks, defensive backs, and edge rushers are paid according to their output, running backs aren’t seen the same way.

Ingram finished his statements by saying, “If you don’t have a Patrick Mahomes if you don’t have a Tom Brady, you are going to need one of these backs to help you get to the playoffs.”

While Ingram might be biased considering he played running back in the league, he is not alone in this analysis.

Regardless of whether they played the position, several pundits have spoken out regarding this situation, pleading with teams to reconsider the case.

The NFL has moved towards a pass-friendly approach, which could naturally bring the value of running backs down slightly.

However, those players are still needed to establish the run, and having second-rate athletes at the position isn’t ideal, especially for teams looking to break into the playoffs.
