Over the winter, the Miami Marlins hired Skip Schumaker to be their new manager.

Sure enough, the Marlins have surprised a lot of people this year.

They own a 53-44 record and are just a half-game back of the third NL Wild Card spot.

The hiring of Schumaker has proven to be a smart one for the Marlins as they look to reach the postseason for the first time since 2020.

On Tuesday, the new Marlins manager stopped by the “BK & Ferrario” show on 101 ESPN St. Louis to discuss how and why his team is so successful and what he believes the key is to having a successful ballclub.

What has led to Skip Schumaker’s first year success with the Marlins? He says it’s all about the pitching, but more specifically their swing-and-miss stuff. The #STLCards are hoping to follow a similar formula in 2024. #BKandFerrario

The Marlins’ pitching has been the key to their success this year.

They have arms such as Sandy Alcantara, Jesus Luzardo, Edward Cabrera, Eury Perez, and Braxton Garrett.

Many of the pitchers the Marlins have on their roster possess swing-and-miss stuff.

Schumaker stated that he believes having that in your rotation and bullpen is important.

These days, strikeouts play well in postseason games, and Schumaker says that having that in October can carry a team on a deep run.

Schumaker also believes that with the new rules which place restrictions on the shift, pitching to contact is much harder because the defense isn’t able to move as freely.

However, with a pitching staff that has a more strikeout-oriented approach, the Marlins have been able to be successful, even against some of the better teams in the National League.

The Marlins have been one of baseball’s best stories this season, and they’ll look to continue improving as the season goes on.
