On Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals received sad news when it was revealed that former broadcaster and two-time World Series champion Mike Shannon had passed away at the age of 83.
Shannon was a St. Louis native and was part of the Cardinals World Series teams in 1964, 1967, and 1968.
He became a broadcaster in 1972 and served in that role until 2021.
Shannon was famous for his unique home run calls, many of which began with his catchphrase, “Get up baby!”
He also saw generations of talented stars in St. Louis.
One of those stars was Matt Carpenter, who is now a member of the San Diego Padres.
On Twitter, Carpenter paid his respects to the Cardinals legend by posting a heartfelt message.
Rest in Peace to the great Mike Shannon.. one of the best to ever do it.. his voice I will never forget..it was a pleasure to get know him and call him a friend..he will be greatly missed..

Carpenter was one of many stars that Shannon had a chance to witness during his time as the Cardinals radio announcer.
The veteran slugger joined the team in 2011 and picked up his first career hit at Busch Stadium.
He also earned a World Series ring, three All-Star nods, and a Silver Slugger Award.
Shannon was behind the microphone for several of Carpenter’s most memorable moments wearing a Cardinals uniform.
Carpenter talked about what Shannon meant to him, saying that his voice is one he will never forget and that it was a pleasure for him to have the opportunity to call him a close friend.
The former Cardinals star closed out his statement by saying that he, like many others associated with the Cardinals and Major League Baseball would miss Shannon terribly.
