One of the quieter contract situations happening right now in the NFL is that of Patriots Pro Bowl edge-rusher Matthew Judon.

Judon, who has reported to training camp in New England, is looking for an extension and some long-term security.

After a recent practice, the 31-year-old defender spoke with the New England media about his contract situation.

“It’s tough going into the last year of a deal…It’s tough to not be jealous (of other players getting paid)…I just gotta focus on myself…It’s not up to me,” Judon said.

Judging by these comments, it feels as though Judon might like to stay in New England for the rest of his career.

However, as he stated, it is not up to him.

Prior to last season, the four-time Pro-Bowler was one of the best defenders in the league.

He combined for a total of 28 sacks, 53 quarterback hits, and 28 tackles for loss across 2021 and 2022.

In 2023, the former Raven played just four games before tearing his lower bicep, which ended up sidelining him for the rest of the season.

Based on his age and what happened last season, the organization might not want to guarantee future money and security to a player who could be declining.

If Judon ends up having a successful season or even a successful first half of the season, perhaps the Pats might want to revisit the prospect of paying him once again.

For now and unless anything changes, it seems like he could be playing on what is essentially a one-year deal for the Patriots in 2024.
