The Dallas Mavericks — and Luka Doncic in particular — proved how good they could be with the proper supporting cast.

Kyrie Irving failed the team and left plenty to be desired when it mattered the most, but it was more than evident that they had put the right pieces around Doncic.

That’s why they need to double down on this core and continue making moves to get back to the ultimate stage, as their championship window is still wide open.

With that in mind, it seems like they’ve set their sights on a big forward already.

According to a report by Ian Begley, the Mavericks have checked in on Jerami Grant’s situation with the Portland Trail Blazers (via Legion Hoops).

The Mavs don’t have that much salary flexibility right now, so it would be interesting to see how they manage to juggle contracts to get this potential deal done.

For reasons that are quite difficult to understand, the Blazers gave Grant a huge contract right before trading Damian Lillard instead of moving him while they had the chance to do so.

Grant is a pesky player who can play defense and put up points on the scoreboard, and he could be a major asset to a championship team.

Nonetheless, it didn’t make sense to give him that big of a contract when they were trying to rebuild.

He’s still on the books for another three seasons, and he could be the X-Factor Jason Kidd’s team craved in the NBA Finals.
