The New York Mets were all smiles on Tuesday, as they defeated the bitter crosstown rival New York Yankees in the Subway Series opener.
Justin Verlander and Pete Alonso had dominant performances for Buck Showalter’s squad, and the Yankees keep dropping important games and continue to occupy last place in the AL East.
During the game, Mets catcher/designated hitter Francisco Alvarez had to be removed after getting hit in the right hand by a pitch during the ninth inning.
Alvarez is one of the most prominent power sources on the Mets roster and one of the most prolific home run hitters in MLB at his position.
Any long-term absence could be extremely detrimental to the Mets’ chances to resurface and fight for a postseason spot.
Fortunately for the Mets, there is good news to report.
“UPDATE: Alvarez says his X-rays came back negative. His concern level, he says, is zero, and he doesn’t plan to have any further testing,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted.

We have seen countless times how a hit-by-pitch can derail a batter’s season.
Broken hamate bones, fractured fingers, damaged wrists… you name it.
The Mets were truly concerned.
The initial X-rays, however, are apparently enough to rule out an extended absence or even a short-term one.
Alvarez has been magnificent for the Mets this year, with a .233/.292/.500 line and 19 home runs in 260 plate appearances.
Batting average is obviously not a strength, but that slash line is excellent for a catcher.
Alvarez and the Mets definitely dodged a bullet on Tuesday.
