Gooden first thanked those who reached out to congratulate him on this honor.

He also thanked Mets owner Steve Cohen, his former teammates, and everybody he had the pleasure of knowing during his time in New York.

Gooden even expressed his gratitude to the fans who have supported him through the years and expressed excitement to see his number retired at Citi Field.

The 58-year-old won a Cy Young, earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1984, a pitching triple crown, and two World Series rings.

He also was a four-time All-Star.

In 1986, the year the Mets last won the World Series, Gooden won 17 games and posted a 2.84 ERA over 33 starts.

The year before was when he earned his Cy Young.

He posted a career-best 1.53 ERA over 35 starts, winning 24 games and tossing 16 complete games.

Gooden will always be remembered fondly by the Mets and their fans who got to witness some of his best years.
