From the moment that former Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell became available, he was a priority for the New York Mets.
However, the Chicago Cubs gave him an unprecedented contract and everybody else was out of the race.
That left the Mets without their primary choice to be the next skipper and replace Buck Showalter.
However, they conducted a thorough interview process with several excellent candidates, and wound up giving Carlos Mendoza the job.
Mendoza, a former New York Yankees coach, will be an MLB manager for the first time in his career.
The fact that the Mets didn’t get Counsell doesn’t mean the rest of the candidates were bad, including Mendoza.
He is seen as one of the most promising young managers in the game.
Mets owner Steve Cohen commented on his hire.
“The Mets’ hiring of Carlos Mendoza on a three-year deal is official. He’ll be introduced as manager at a noon ET press conference tomorrow. ‘Carlos is full of energy, passion and it was easy to see he’ll have a great rapport with our players,’ Steve Cohen said in a statement,” Mets insider Anthony DiComo tweeted with quotes from the owner himself.

Mendoza is 43, one of the youngest in MLB, and has been working with the Yanks as a minor league coach or instructor since 2009.
Ahead of the 2018 season, he got a promotion to MLB team as an infield coach, and prior to the 2020 campaign, he was promoted to bench coach.
He is now ready to start his own way as a manager in the majors, showcasing the talent that makes him so respected.
