The New York Mets have had a disappointing season so far.

They are currently without Pete Alonso, but are surprisingly five games below the .500 mark.

On Tuesday, they fell to the New York Yankees by a final score of 7-6 in the Subway Series opener.

Left-hander Drew Smith was brought into the game in the seventh inning, but was ejected before throwing a pitch because umpires suspected a foreign substance was on his hands.

Smith was understandably upset, but after the game, the left-hander revealed that he was checked in the dugout by an MLB official, who told him that there was nothing on his hands.

Smith talked about his experience on Tuesday in his postgame interview.

He even said that he had to almost force the MLB official in the tunnel to check his hands.

Smith stated that the official even laughed about it when he said that there was nothing there, understanding that the umpiring crew had made a mistake.

Smith predicted that the umpires who checked him when he came in would try to embellish the story and say that his hands were as sticky as they could possibly be.

However, since an MLB official ultimately checked his hands and found nothing, Smith may end up not being punished for this.

More than likely, that will be the case.

Smith maintained during his postgame interview that he had nothing on his hands as he was coming into the game and reiterated that after the game, the MLB official he met with didn’t find anything.
