The New York Mets lost again on Wednesday and are now 17 games out of first place in the NL East.

Their 36-44 record is much, much worse than everybody imagined, and that includes members of the team, their own fans, and other fanbases.

The situation has become so bad that owner Steven Cohen had to calm everybody down this week.

Fans are looking for answers, and nobody has them.

It’s true that the Mets have had to deal with numerous injuries, particularly to their starting rotation and bullpen.

They are without key reliever Edwin Diaz and important starter Jose Quintana, and veterans Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer had to miss time for various reasons at some point this year, too.

However, a Mets reliever, Adam Ottavino, said an unequivocal truth to team insider Anthony DiComo: other teams deal with adversity, too.

The Mets haven’t been overcoming adversity, whereas teams like the Miami Marlins have been succeeding even with their best position player, Jazz Chisholm Jr., having missed roughly six weeks until recently returning.

Their ace, Sandy Alcantara, has regressed considerably, yet here they are.

The Atlanta Braves lost Max Fried to injury, and the Philadelphia Phillies were without their top performer, Bryce Harper, for weeks, too.

The same problems that have been plaguing the Mets all year long have affected other squads.

That’s why the Mets need to look internally and commit to themselves and their fans.

They need to improve, because they have it in them.

They are capable of pulling off a return to form and fighting for a playoff spot.

Will they?
