David Stearns has already taken over as the New York Mets’ president of baseball operations.

The team had coveted him for a while, and finally signed him to a long-term contract to run the show in Queens.

With Buck Showalter not coming back to manage the Mets in 2024, the team is looking for a new skipper.

Craig Counsell has earned the respect of the entire league with his achievements with the Milwaukee Brewers, the squad he has managed since 2015.

He has taken them to multiple postseasons and has reached as far as the National League Championship Series.

Stearns, who worked alongside Counsell since September 2015 as the main baseball man in Milwaukee, has his sights set on bringing his guy to New York and asked his former franchise for permission to speak with him.

The permission, according to Mets insider Andy Martino, was granted.

“The Mets have received permission to interview Craig Counsell for their managerial position, reports @martinonyc. They will be interviewing him soon,” SNY Mets tweeted.

Counsell is one of the smartest guys in the business, with deep analytics knowledge and the added bonus of working with Stearns for nearly a decade.

Evidently, the two respect and understand each other, and could potentially bring their working relationship to Citi Field.

It would be a coup for the Mets, and as we just saw with Bob Melvin and the San Diego Padres – San Francisco Giants case, when a team is granted permission to interview a candidate they really like, a hiring materializes almost every time.
