The stage is set for another hard-fought battle between the Los Angeles Lakers and Denver Nuggets, with these two Western Conference heavyweights going head-to-head in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

There’s no love lost between these two teams as there was a lot of chirping before, during, and after the Western Conference Finals last year when the Nuggets eventually won the franchise’s first NBA title.

One person who really sparked sort of a rivalry and bad blood between these two teams was Nuggets head coach Mike Malone, who didn’t hold back during the team’s championship parade last year and took multiple shots at the Lakers.

According to Harrison Wind of DNVR Sports, ahead of their first-round matchup this year, Malone was asked about the Lakers, and he gave an honest answer about his team’s opponent.

“We swept them last year,” Malone said. “We swept them this year. They come in playing really well and hungry. They want to flip that script. Our players understand that.”

This time around, the Lakers are once again the underdog, with few believing LeBron James and company can get the best of the defending NBA champions in the first round.

However, anything can happen in the playoffs, and both teams will be out to prove a point in this series, with the Lakers looking to show they can contend with the best of the best in the conference and the Nuggets looking to impose their will on Los Angeles for a second straight year in the postseason.
