If there is a word to describe San Diego Padres starter Michael Wacha and his career performance, it should be “inconsistency”.

However, there is no denying that the man is talented and has been on a solid run since last season.

Over a three-year span from 2019 to 2021, his best ERA finish was 4.76.

However, he had a very good year with the Boston Red Sox in 2022, as he posted a 3.32 ERA in 127.1 frames.

The Padres came calling, looking for him to be a back-end starter.

He has been that, and then some.

Wacha’s 2023 ERA is down to a phenomenal 2.89 in 74.2 innings with the Friars.

That number has been fueled by an elite recent run.

“Michael Wacha threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in the Padres’ win over the Guardians Wednesday. Since May 2, Wacha has an ERA of 0.91 (5 ER allowed in 49 1/3 IP over 8 starts), the best ERA among qualified starters in MLB over that time frame,” ESPN Stats & Info tweeted.

That’s not too shabby: five earned runs allowed in his most recent eight stars is something that truly great pitcher achieve.

Scoring a run off Wacha these days seems like an impossible task.

The right-hander seems to be in full command of his entire arsenal, and his confidence is through the roof.

Between the last two seasons, Wacha has accumulated an impressive 18-4 record.

Health issues have heavily affected his career, but the Padres have sent him out there like he is a workhorse with a rubber arm.

Hopefully, the wheels don’t fall off soon, because what he is doing on the mound is nothing short of amazing.
