The Los Angeles Dodgers returned home on Friday night after having lost two out of three against the surprisingly hot Pittsburgh Pirates.

Their first assignment was the struggling St. Louis Cardinals.

After St. Louis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, the Dodgers began to chip away and ultimately emerged victorious, defeating the Cards by a final of 7-3 and taking the series opener.

One player, in particular, got to experience a special moment on Friday.

23-year-old Miguel Vargas got the start at second base for Los Angeles.

With the Dodgers leading 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Vargas took Chris Stratton deep for his first home run of the year.

That home run ultimately put the game out of reach.

It was a two-run homer that made it a 7-2 game.

But it was also Vargas’ first home run of the season and second of his career.

The 23-year-old appeared in 18 games for the Dodgers last season, making his Major League debut on August 3.

He made the Opening Day roster out of spring training and has been used primarily as a second baseman.

In 73 at-bats this season, Vargas is hitting for a .219 average with eight RBI and a .705 OPS.

With the win, the Dodgers moved back over the .500 mark and remained one game behind the young, upstart Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL West.

Vargas’ home run put the game out of reach and helped pave the way for the Dodgers to bounce back from a tough series loss to the Pirates.
