After an impressive 2023 NFL season in which the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had to pivot to veteran journeyman Baker Mayfield following the retirement of superstar quarterback Tom Brady and still made the NFL playoffs, the team had a decision to make regarding whether to re-sign star wide receiver Mike Evans or let him walk in NFL free agency.

Even though Evans had never played for another team on the professional level, many believed he would test the market and most likely leave the team because Tampa Bay didn’t secure his future before last season, indicating they may have been content with him leaving.

With Evans being arguably the most consistent wide receiver in the league, having cracked the 1,000-yard receiving mark every season of his NFL career, he was bound to have a market in free agency, and it appears he did despite deciding to re-sign with the Buccaneers.

During an interview with Buccaneers legend Gerald McCoy, Evans admitted he considered signing with the Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs via the NFL’s Twitter account.

“In the back of my mind, I’m thinking Houston, Kansas City,” Evans said. “I love Pat Mahomes’ game. I’m thinking those two teams, and obviously, I’m thinking Bucs.”

With the Texans being a team on the rise and looking for another weapon for up-and-coming quarterback C.J. Stroud, it isn’t surprising that they’d reach out to Evans before ultimately deciding to trade for Stefon Diggs.

As for the Chiefs, Kansas City was determined to upgrade their receiving corps during this NFL offseason, so Evans would’ve been the ideal addition before signing fellow veteran Marquise Brown.

Needless to say, Evans is content with his decision, and he’ll try to help this team reach the postseason once again in 2024 while keeping his streak alive.
