Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has come under fire for his coaching style many times in recent years, but the Dolphins continue to win games and have been trending upward during his tenure even with many fans and pundits disagreeing with McDaniel’s calm demeanor.
In a recent media appearance, McDaniel opened up about his coaching style and showed plenty of self-awareness as to why some people disagree with him and his methods.
While speaking with Dan LeBatard, McDaniel said he had no choice but to be different because “I didn’t look the part by nature anyway,” and he did this by attaching to greatness and admiring great athletes on his way up, while also adding “If you could help anyone achieve their hopes and dreams and you can convince them of such, they don’t really care about the way you look or the way you talk.”

McDaniel is just 41 years old and started with the Denver Broncos as an intern in 2005, so his path to becoming a head coach is about as unconventional as it gets.
He played wide receiver in college at Yale, a degree that certainly helped him ascend up the coaching tree during the many stops he made prior to the Dolphins.
McDaniel often finds himself going viral due to his funny quips during press conferences, but fans are also blessed with plenty of clips of him joking around and bonding with his players and being brutally honest about holding himself accountable and telling his players when he made mistakes instead of blaming them.
It’s unconventional and extremely progressive, but the Dolphins are getting better because of it.
