Usually, you would think a 39-year-old starting pitcher is not going to attract a lot of trade interest in MLB.

Think again.

MLB front offices value pitching depth and, above all things, experience.

This is why Kansas City Royals right-hander Zack Greinke has a non-zero chance of getting moved before the trade deadline even though his team is currently not engaged in talks with another squad.

“The Royals aren’t engaged presently in trade conversations involving Zack Greinke, but he’s one name to watch as we approach the August 1 deadline. Greinke, 39, is on an expiring contract and has been a durable starter for KC this year,” MLB insider Jon Morosi tweeted.

Greinke has a 4.65 ERA, but finished at 3.68 last year and offers veteran leadership and innings.

He has pitched 71.2 of them this year and his arm is used to big workloads at this point.

If you think teams aren’t looking at him as a potential candidate for a trade, go ahead and take a look at the replies on Morosi’s tweet.

Fans of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, and New York Mets asked for him in that tweet.

All of them are legit contenders.

Greinke has a chance to make it to the Hall of Fame when all is said and done, and he has a career 3.45 ERA.

He knows how to prevent runs; and he knows how to pitch with diminished velocity.

Command and smarts make him a solid pitcher even at his age.

He could be finishing his career away from Kansas City.
