The Cleveland Guardians extended second baseman Andres Gimenez on Tuesday.
The deal, worth $106.5 million over the next seven years, is actually one of the most lucrative in Guardians history.
Gimenez was one of the players the Guardians got in the Francisco Lindor deal two years ago.
“Two years ago, the Cleveland #Guardians traded shortstop Francisco Lindor to the N.Y. #Mets in a package that included shortstop Andres Gimenez. Lindor signed a 10-year, $341 million contract with the Mets. Gimenez just signed a 7-year, $106.5 million contract to stay in Cleveland,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted.

Before the 2021 campaign, the Guardians sent Lindor and Carlos Carrasco to the New York Mets in exchange for Gimenez, Amed Rosario (another regular in Cleveland’s lineup), pitcher Josh Wolfe, and outfielder Isaiah Greene.
At the time, the Guardians took a lot of heat because they couldn’t, or didn’t want to, extend Lindor.
Time eventually told us that he commanded a $341 million contract; and it was also time that proved the Guardians’ scouting and player development departments right.
Not because one of the teams “won” or “lost” the trade, but because Cleveland obtained talent worthy of extending in the deal.
It didn’t look like that when the trade was executed.
Lindor is still the best player, but the gap has closed…a lot.
The Guardians are happy with a player nearly as talented and much, much cheaper; and yet to hit his prime years.
