Of all the disappointments in baseball this year, no team comes close to the St. Louis Cardinals, who own a 33-45 record and are eight games back in the NL Central.
Though the NL Central is still a winnable division, time is ticking for St. Louis.
While this season may be a lost cause, they are in need of some starting pitching reinforcements, more specifically pitchers who can help them in 2024.
With many around the league expecting them to buyers and sellers simultaneously, Jon Morosi of MLB Network commented on what the trade deadline may look like for them and what they may seek to accomplish.

Morosi stated that the Cardinals will be an intriguing team to watch at the deadline because they are playing slightly better baseball and the NL Central is within reach despite their record.
However, Morosi noted that the team still needs to rebalance its roster and cited their young position players such as Nolan Gorman, Dylan Carlson, Tommy Edman, and Brendan Donovan that could be used to bring in some pitching.
He expects at least one of those four players to be moved prior to the deadline, no matter the record.
Morosi pointed out that it wouldn’t be “an outright sell” by the Cardinals, but rather a move to shake things up and pull from a strength to address a weakness.
If the Cardinals do bring in some top-level starting pitching, it may be more of a move to strengthen the rotation for 2024, as Adam Wainwright is retiring and Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery will be free agents, leaving just Miles Mikolas and Steven Matz.
