The Boston Red Sox are ready to promote trade acquisition Luis Urias to the active roster.
To do that, however, they needed a 40-man roster spot.
Given his lack of production this season, utilityman Christian Arroyo was designated for assignment on Friday.
MLB insider Bob Nightengale notes that given his resume and abilities, Arroyo might be a player that interests multiple teams in the free agent market.
“Veteran infielder Christian Arroyo, who was DFA’d today by the #RedSox, should be a good fit for a number of contenders for the pennant stretch. He’s earning $2 million this season,” he tweeted.

$2 million is a very reasonable price tag for an infielder who has the potential to return average offensive performance and play multiple positions around the diamond: first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and even right field.
Unfortunately for Arroyo, his lousy numbers in 2023 could scare off some squads.
In 206 plate appearances, Arroyo has hit .241/.268/.369 with three home runs and 24 RBI.
That returned a paltry 66 wRC+: a 100 wRC+ indicates league-average performance with the bat.
He is far from that mark this year but reached it in 2021 and 2022 with Boston.
He has done it in the past, and he can do it again in the right situation and under the right circumstances.
Arroyo could look to join a contender and act as a utility player.
He is now expendable for Boston now that they have Urias in the fold.
He had been with the Sox since 2020, but will seek greener pastures now.
