With the second half of the 2023 MLB season about to get underway, it’s very clear that the St. Louis Cardinals will be selling at the trade deadline.
However, it appears unlikely that any sell-off will include Paul Goldschmidt or Nolan Arenado.
St. Louis is 38-52 to start the second half and they sit in last place in the NL Central, 11.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds.
On Thursday, MLB Network insider and St. Louis native Greg Amsinger appeared on 101 ESPN St. Louis and discussed what he thinks the Cardinals will do at the deadline, and even recalled telling Arenado that he didn’t believe he would be traded on August 1.
How does Greg Amsinger think the #stlcards will approach the upcoming deadline?
Greg joined #TheOpeningDrive to break down Mo’s comments, the need for urgency & a quick list of players he could see getting moved from the Cardinals.

Amsinger listed Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty, Paul DeJong, Tyler O’Neill, and Jordan Hicks as players who may be traded at the deadline.
However, he reiterated what many have been saying for quite some time, that Goldschmidt and Arenado aren’t going anywhere due to the fact that the Cardinals still have a solid core intact.
That core also includes Tommy Edman, Brendan Donovan, Willson Contreras, and Nolan Gorman.
Amsinger even went as far as to say that the current core the Cards have in place could still be good enough to win the NL Central in 2024.
But one thing is clear, and that is that Goldschmidt and Arenado will not be leaving St. Louis anytime soon.
Amsinger predicted that St. Louis will be active at the deadline in terms of making trades and later spending money in free agency as President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak prepares to retool the team for 2024 and beyond.
