The St. Louis Cardinals have had a disastrous season to date.
However, thanks to the NL Central being one of the weaker divisions in baseball, they find themselves only eight games back despite their 27-42 record.
With the trade deadline approaching, it’s anybody’s guess as to what the Cards will do.
They could potentially add some pitching, or decide to sell if they can’t turn their season around.
However, MLB Network insider and St. Louis native Greg Amsinger thinks that the Cardinals could find a way to buy and sell simultaneously and predicted that they could potentially trade reigning MVP Paul Goldschmidt if they want to shake things up.
How can the #STLCards shake up a season in distress?@MLBNetwork host Greg Amsinger joined #TheOpeningDrive to talk about the Cardinals need for a shake-up & why a manager move wouldn’t get them very far.

Amsinger started off by mentioning that firing manager Oli Marmol wouldn’t do much to shake things up.
However, if the Cardinals were to trade Goldschmidt, they could get a massive return for him.
Depending on where they are in the standings, Goldschmidt could bring back some top prospects, or even get the Cardinals some top-of-the-rotation and high-leverage bullpen arms.
This is certainly a move that won’t be popular with Cardinals fans.
But with Goldschmidt in his age-35 season and only under contract through 2024, it might make sense for the Cardinals to see what they can get for the reigning NL MVP.
It may also clear up a spot for Jordan Walker to play first base instead of in the outfield, where he has noticeably struggled.
It could even allow somebody like Juan Yepez to get more at-bats.
Amsinger noted that Goldschmidt could help out a team in need of more offensive power as well.
