In one of the most unexpected moves of the season, the Boston Red Sox decided to cut ties with executive Chaim Bloom after a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees.

Bloom left the team tied for last place with New York; and after two additional last-place finishes in 2020 and 2022, the ownership believed it was time for a change.

Whether firing Bloom was the right decision or not is still being hotly debated on Twitter.

Now, the Red Sox must line up their replacement as soon as possible.

Some names have started to appear as candidates according to MLB insider Jon Morosi.

“Chris Antonetti and David Forst are two names being mentioned in the industry today as potential candidates to become the next Red Sox president of baseball operations,” he tweeted.

Antonetti has made himself a career successfully leading the Cleveland Guardians’ baseball activities since 2010.

He won MLB’s Executive of the Year award last year after their improbable 92-70 season.

Forst, a Harvard grad, is the general manager of the Oakland Athletics.

He has been in the position since 2015, when Billy Beane was promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations.

Both executives, particularly Antonetti, are highly respected in the baseball universe.

It’s unclear how feasible it is for the Red Sox to hire one of them given their current commitment to their teams.

The next Red Sox baseball chief will likely be required to make the postseason.

Bloom built a decent farm system, but the on-field results eventually led the team to make a change.
