The New York Mets were expected to be a clear postseason contender this season.

After all, they had added pieces such as Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga, and Jose Quintana to their rotation.

However, things didn’t go according to plan and the Mets were ultimately forced to become sellers at the trade deadline.

Both Verlander and Max Scherzer were dealt as the Mets conducted a fire sale.

Now, it is unknown when the Mets will return to contention.

On MLB Network, Jon Heyman talked about the team’s fire sale and why he ultimately thinks it may have been the right decision as they look towards the future.

Heyman acknowledged that Mets fans are obviously not too happy at the moment, as their team is non-competitive, which is something that they did not expect this year, especially after winning 101 games in 2022.

However, Heyman explained why he believes the Mets when they say they plan on being competitive again in 2024.

He talked about the nucleus of stars that the Mets currently have on their roster and how it should be something they build around in the future.

The 2024 rotation only consists of Senga and Quintana at the moment.

However, the free agent market will be full of quality starting pitchers, and Heyman believes the Mets should be in a good position to make some key moves and strengthen their rotation.

The Mets also landed a ton of solid prospects in exchange for their assets at the trade deadline.

Heyman believes that the glass if half full for the Mets, rather than half empty, and that things will be better in 2024.
