Everybody talks about the Oakland Athletics as MLB’s most notorious tankers in recent years.
However, the Washington Nationals are not far behind.
Yes, they won the 2019 World Series and were contenders for years before that.
Yet, ever since that season, they have done everything to cut payroll and little to contend.
They have traded Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Juan Soto, and many other stars; and they also let some of them go via free agency over the last few years.
As a result, they were the worst team in the National League last year and, at 5-13, the situation is repeating itself this year.
Offensively, they are a mess.
Only the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers have scored fewer runs than them.
Whereas home runs are common for other teams, they are virtually impossible accomplishments for the Nationals’ offensively-challenged lineup.

Every league has good and bad teams, but sometimes it feels like the league should intervene.
It’s crazy that a player, in this case Alonso, has more home runs than the whole Nationals team through roughly three weeks of play.
It will be another long, grueling year for Nats fans.
It has been nothing but pain since they won the World Series four years ago.
They don’t even have a franchise player.
Just young prospects being asked to mature at a more accelerated pace than they should.
