Before the 2023 season started, there were high expectations regarding three playoff teams from the year before: the New York Mets, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the San Diego Padres.
Well, things happen: injuries, suspensions, unexpected slumps, and many more roadblocks usually get in the way.
Now, none of those three MLB teams is ranked higher than fourth in their respective divisions.
The Mets are 36-45, fourth in the NL East and 17.5 games (!) behind the first-place Atlanta Braves.
The Cards are last in the Central with a 33-47 mark.
The Padres, meanwhile, are fourth in the NL West at 37-44.
To say it has been a rough year for all three organizations would be an understatement.
All three made sizable investments in the offseason to improve their rosters, particularly the Mets and Padres.
Now, an MLB insider is seriously doubting their chances this campaign.
Keep thinking one or more of these teams will make a run. But their chances for recovery continue to dwindle. https://t.co/ZYvQeiKdST

The Washington Post’s Chelsea Janes believes one or more of those three squads will eventually get things going, but concedes that it’s looking harder and harder by the day.
They just keep accumulating losses and heartbreaks, and their fanbases are extremely frustrated.
They still have half of the year to pull off the improbable, but it does look extremely hard to achieve in all three cases.
The good thing about their prospects is that there are several Wild Card spots that may become more and more realistic as they start accumulating wins.
But it’s hard not to agree that, according to the quality of their roster and their payroll, all three franchises are severely underachieving this season.
