Most of the teams in MLB can still believe they are vying for a place in the 2024 World Series.
Realistically, the teams with those aspirations are significantly fewer than that.
The playoffs are reserved for the elite, the very best teams in each league.
The Fall Classic, the ultimate goal, is scheduled to start on Oct. 25, and if there is a Game 7, it will be on Nov. 2.
However, if both World Series squads end their Championship Series by Oct. 19, that starting date could be moved for the first time ever.
“For the first time in history, MLB has a flexible World Series schedule,” MLB insider Bob Nightengale tweeted. “If the NLCS and ALCS each end by Oct. 19, the World Series will be moved up three days to Oct. 25 to avoid the long layoffs.”

According to Nightengale, if the NLCS and ALCS both end on or before Oct. 19, Game 1 of the World Series will be moved up three days to Oct. 22.
If that’s the case, the off days would be Thursday, Oct. 24, and Monday, Oct. 28.
If the 2024 World Series starts on Oct. 25 as scheduled, the off days would be Sunday, Oct. 27, and Thursday, Oct. 31.
The idea — a good one — is to avoid long periods without games.
Last year, both Championship Series went to seven games, but in 2022, they ended in four and five games, respectively.
That year, the final Championship Series games were on Oct. 23, and the World Series started five days later, on Oct. 28 and went all the way to Nov. 5.
That is too many days of waiting, with teams and baseball fans eager to watch the most exciting series of the season.
MLB, in this case, is taking some smart steps to address that.
