The Los Angeles Lakers used to be the prime destination for free agents all over the league.

Whether it was players or coaches, everybody wanted something to do with the Purple & Gold.

That might no longer be the case.

Either because of their flawed roster, excessive media scrutiny, the overall picture in the Western Conference, or other teams’ reluctance to engage in trade talks with them, the Lakers have had tough times getting some new faces to Crypto.Com Arena.

They haven’t gotten a big name in trades or free agency, and even some assistant coach candidates have turned them down.

According to a report by Dave McMenamin of ESPN, former Coach of the Year Dwane Casey withdrew himself from consideration to join JJ Redic’s coaching staff.

He reportedly struggled with the decision, but eventually chose not to uproot his family.

Needless to say, this isn’t how JJ Redick wanted to start his tenure in Los Angeles.

Also, Casey is the second coach that has turned down the Lakers this offseason alone, at least that we know of, after Dan Hurley chose to stay at UConn instead of becoming a head coach.

What was once the team everybody wanted to play for is no longer an attractive destination, and Jeanie Buss has plenty to work to do to protect and recover her father’s legacy.
