Text messages are an interesting form of interpersonal media — sometimes they get responded to immediately with a sense of urgency, and other times, they get ignored.

Sometimes, people will ignore text messages for a long time, at least from certain people.

Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero was asked how many unread text messages he has, and he revealed 2,353.

“How many unread text messages do you have?”

Paolo Banchero: “2,353… I tell people all the time I’m a bad texter. If you want to get ahold of me you probably have to call me.”

Panchero is one of the NBA’s rising stars, and it was just over one year ago that he was named the league’s Rookie of the Year for the 2022-23 season.

This past season, he averaged 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists a game and was named to the All-Star team for the first time.

Banchero still has lots of room for improvement — he shot a modest 45.5 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from 3-point range during the 2023-24 campaign — but he has turned the Magic from laughingstocks into a legitimate playoff team.

They’re coming off a season in which they won 47 games, finished fifth in the Eastern Conference and got to Game 7 of the first round of the playoffs before falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Orlando has become one of basketball’s better defensive teams, and they have some intriguing young talent, including forward Franz Wagner, center Wendell Carter Jr. and guard Jalen Suggs.

This summer, they added veteran shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a two-time NBA champion, and they’re hoping to take the next step and win their first playoff series since 2010.

If that happens, Banchero may end up reaching 10,000 unread text messages.
