The complicated drama with James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers is getting messier.

Adrian Wojnarowski and Ramona Shelburne are reporting that the NBA has launched “an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding 76ers star James Harden’s public admonishment of the franchise’s President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey.”

According to these two reporters, the league is trying to understand whether “Harden was portending a 2023-24 holdout in violation of the league’s collective bargaining agreement or had been referencing past contract discussions with the organization that might constitute salary cap circumvention.”

In other words, the league really wants to get to the bottom of this and see what is going on.

Harden knew that he was going to create a huge controversy when he publicly called Morey a liar.

What was Morey lying about and why was it enough to make Harden demand a trade?

Did anyone break any sort of rules related to promises or contracts?

The entire situation is very complex and still in motion so the results of this investigation could be revealed long after it is resolved.

But there is a chance that this situation doesn’t get resolved any time soon.

The Sixers have now officially given up on trade talks with the Los Angeles Clippers, Harden’s preferred destination.

The team wants Harden to attend training camp in September.

According to the ESPN report, sources say Harden plans to do just that.

That will provide a very awkward, but perhaps productive, time.

Maybe Harden will come to training camp and decide that he doesn’t want to leave the team after all.

Or maybe he will accept the concept of moving to a team other than the Clippers.

If that is his choice and a different franchise offers the Sixers a tantalizing deal, then Harden might not even make it to training camp with the 76ers.

However, the official investigation into everything that’s happened so far will continue.
