The San Antonio Spurs aren’t a good basketball team right now.

The Jeremy Sochan experiment at point guard might not be what they need, and while Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson have shown great upside, they’re still not deep enough to compete at the highest level.

Needless to say, Victor Wembanyama has shown flashes of being a generational player, but he’s just 19 years old, and it’ll be a while before he’s single-handedly able to carry a team.

However, even though the current situation might not be ideal, NBA veteran Austin Rivers believes Wembanyama will be just fine in San Antonio.

Talking on his “Off Guard” podcast with Pausha Haghighi, Rivers explained that even though losing is obviously hard for all players, this will only set the Spurs up for even more success down the line, as Wemby is getting reps and “scar tissue”, and they’re going to have another high draft pick.

On top of that, Rivers believes the Spurs have become a prime destination for free agents.

They’re close to a big city like Austin; they have no income tax, one of the greatest coaches of all time locked in for at least another five years, and a once-in-a-lifetime prospect to play alongside.

Wembanyama hasn’t even stopped growing.

Also, he’s going to keep getting much better for years to come, and watching is development and growth will be exciting.

They might not be doing a lot of winning right now, but this Spurs team has a bright future ahead of them.
