More than ever, Lamar Jackson seems on his way out as the quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens after it was revealed on Monday that he had asked to be traded.

The team has affixed its non-exclusive franchise tag on him, which allows him to negotiate a new contract with any team he wants, and if the Ravens decide not to match that contract, they will have to receive two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Jackson reportedly has been demanding a huge fully-guaranteed deal in the area of at least $40 million a year.

If they end up trading Jackson, NFL analyst Matt Miller says they should call the San Francisco 49ers about Trey Lance.

Let’s play what if.

IF Lamar Jackson is done in Baltimore, the Ravens should be calling the 49ers about Trey Lance.

Depending on what pick Balt gets in return for Jackson, that could be a lower cost solution at QB that fits the existing offense based on pre-draft abilities.

Lance will be in his third pro season in 2023, and thus far, he has played in just eight games while starting in only four of them.

His 2022 campaign was cut short by a severe ankle injury he suffered in Week 2, and as a rookie, he served as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo.

As of now, it is expected by many that, after being tabbed the 49ers’ starter at the start of last season, he will once again be a backup in 2023, this time behind Brock Purdy.

Although it is unclear what type of a threat he will be throwing the football, Lance can definitely run with the ball, much like Jackson.

Some pundits, such as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, have suggested the 49ers acquire Jackson, but he only completed 62.3 percent of his passes in 2022, and his passing production has declined since his MVP season in 2019.

But other observers feel San Francisco should move ahead with its current QB corps and simply focus on getting Purdy, who had surgery on a torn UCL in his throwing elbow earlier this month, ready for next season.
