NFL Insider Details The Unique Jordan Love Extension

The Green Bay Packers faced a decision on Tuesday — should they pick up the fifth year on quarterback Jordan Love’s contract?

Love is now their starter under center after they traded future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets last week, and for better or worse, the franchise’s fortunes now rest on the 24-year-old’s shoulders.

Green Bay ended up turning down that fifth-year option and instead gave Love a one-year extension to keep him on the team until the end of the 2024 season.

NFL analyst Field Yates outlined how unique the situation is.

Jordan Love’s 5th-year option value was for $20.272M, fully guaranteed.

Rather than picking that up, Green Bay gives Love a chance at more upside, with a bit of protection for the team with less guaranteed money.

This will be the first time since 1991 the Packers will not have a big name at quarterback, and no one knows what Love can or will become.

After they took him with the No. 26 in the 2020 NFL Draft, he sat for his entire rookie season, then played in 10 games over the last two years, completing 50 of 83 pass attempts and throwing for three touchdowns and three interceptions.

At Utah State University, Love put up 3,567 passing yards and 32 touchdown passes as a sophomore and 3,402 passing yards and 20 touchdown passes the following year.

One negative for him is that he won’t have a whole lot of weapons or playmakers around him.

Star wide receiver Davante Adams was traded last offseason, and wideout Allen Lazard recently departed to join Rodgers in New York.

Green Bay is hoping wideout Christian Watson, who came on strong late in the 2022 season, will continue to improve and become an ace.
