Despite training camps around the NFL now being well underway, plenty of talented free agents are still available, especially on defense.
According to insider Ari Meirov, veteran defensive backs such as Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons, former Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore, Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard, eight-time Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson, etc. are all available.
It is unknown whether or not any of these players have had offers, but they could be waiting to sign with a team until the season gets closer so that they do not risk injury in training camp.

Players such as Peterson, Gilmore, Howard, and Simmons are all 30 years of age or older.
Even veteran safeties like Micah Hyde and Adrian Amos, who have each played for multiple teams, are either entering year 10 or have played in the league for over 10 years.
Teams could be very weary of handing out multi-year deals to aging players this time of year given how many players are currently on the roster in the preseason.
However, some of these free-agent defensive backs are ascending.
Simmons could very well be the best player on this list.
The former Denver Broncos star has the most interceptions among safeties since he entered the league in 2016 (30) and is coming off of another Pro Bowl appearance in 2023.
Now that he and the Broncos have cut ties, that should allow for a safety-needy team to jump up and sign him.
But again, the closer the season gets, the more likely it is that a lot of these players could sign with a new team.
