The San Francisco 49ers may be Super Bowl contenders, but they do have a bit of a quarterback controversy.

Incumbent starter Brock Purdy is recovering from a torn UCL in his throwing elbow, and he is reportedly on schedule with his recovery.

There is increasing optimism that he will be able to start in Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season, but nothing is chiseled in stone yet.

If Purdy isn’t able to start in Week 1, the thinking has been that Trey Lance would start, but Mike Florio says that Sam Darnold would have the inside track to become the 49ers’ QB1 in such a scenario, via the Rich Eisen Show.

Purdy did very well in 2022 after taking over the starting spot following a season-ending injury to veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, and he took the team to the NFC Championship Game until his injury.

The season started with Lance as the starter, but he suffered a season-ending injury to his ankle in Week 2.

The Niners signed Darnold as a free agent this offseason, and so far in his career, he has been considered a bust despite being the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and playing extremely well while at the University of Southern California.

The fact that Darnold is ahead of Lance on San Francisco’s depth chart, according to Florio, seems to say much more about Lance than Darnold.

Luckily, head coach Kyle Shanahan employs an offensive scheme that is QB-friendly and doesn’t require an uber-talented signal-caller to function well.
